Sending you tulips from Amsterdam in spring, is what the popular song tells you. But did you know Flevoland is the largest flower area in the Netherlands? You’ll find not only the most, but also the largest flowerfields. In April you can take a scenic route of about 80 kilometres called, the tulip route where you can enjoy the beautiful and colourful tulip fields. Imagine this, rows and rows, fields and fields of tulips. It is like a fairy tale. Along the scenic route there are several stops you can make. You can visit flower festivals or pick your own tulips at the special tulip garden. There are farmers that open their home for you. We bought the most delightful jam at this really small farm and prune wine that takes some getting used to but is wonderful with a chunk of cheese.
Did you know growing tulips is very invasive for the farmland? Well, I did not but I was lucky enough to have a long talk with one of the farmers. Turns out most of the tulip growers come from the North of Holland. They rent farmland from farmers in Flevoland. Every year another piece. Only once every eight years you can grow tulips on the same piece of land. So they hop from field to field. That is why the tulip route changes every year. So do come back every year to enjoy this spectacular tulip route.
It is really worth your while to walk or cycle (part of) the 80 kilometres and stay with farmers or AirB&B along the way. There are also several Bed & Breakfasts and hotels nearby.
